Banks Appeal!

We have been informed that Banks Renewables have taken Copeland's decision to appeal.  It is very important to let the Planning Inspector know how many of us believe that Weddicar Rigg Wind Farm would be an unwelcome and unwanted intrusion on the landscape.  Comments on the appeal can be submitted via the following link:

Please spare just a few minutes to submit a sentence or two via the Planning Inspectorate's portal.  If you have more to say, or wish to include attachments, this can be easily by achieved by emailing the case officer.  If you prefer to use the postal service, three copies of your comment will be required.  They should be sent to the Planning Inspectorate at Room 3/06 Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Bristol BS1 6PN.  Don't forget to include the following reference number - APP/Z0923/A/12/2191361/NWF

RWE Energy, otherwise known as NPower make their move on Weddicar Rigg. A bit further along from the Keekle Head scheme and equally objectionable.

So far so good!

Last week, following an excellent speech by Cllr Stephen Haraldsen, a small group of Copeland councillors decided that they were minded to refuse the Weddicar Wind Farm application despite the planning officer's recommendation for approval.  Before we break out the champagne, however, I understand that the application now has to go before a full council meeting before Copeland's final decision is reached.

Decision Likely in July

Copeland Borough Council have required a great deal more ecological information from the developer, particularly in relation to the hen harrier population near the site.  This information has now been received by the Council and, at the time of writing, it is being circulated amongst interested parties and consultees to the applcation.  The proposal is expected to go before councillors to be determined at the July planning meeting.

30th November 2011

Councillors will be making site visits to consider the proposals from a number of viewpoints and the it is expected that the Development Panel will consider the scheme at either the January or February meeting.

Copeland Borough Council report that there have been a large number of responses to this application - hardly surprising when it would impact upon so many peoples lives.

10th November 2011

Moresby Parish Council have arranged a public meeting to discuss the proposal for Weddicar. This will take place on 22nd November at 7.30pm at the Social Club on School Brow, Moresby Parks.

Please come along, it is your opportunity to meet with like minded individuals and to learn more about the scheme and what it means for this area of West Cumbria.

29 July 2011

The exhibition showing the plans for this scheme has now finished. FORCE members have attended the events at Frizington, Moresby Parks and Arlecdon to take the opportunity to gain some early  information on this scheme, but the information was fairly basic - as is normal for these events. You can see this information in the exhibition booklet which is available to download here. Sadly, one person encountered what he felt to be ‘bullying’ from a senior representative of Banks Development Team, which was rather surprising given the objective behind such exhibitions, and somewhat dissapointing from a company who claim to be the good guys in Windfarm Development.

It is expected that the Planning Application will be submitted in late August this year.

July 2011

Banks Renewables are holding a public exhibition of their proposals for six wind turbines on Weddicar. This scheme is titled Keekle Head Wind Farm. It is very close to the existing development at Fairfield Farm, Pica, and will impact significantly on views of the Lake District National Park.

The turbines will be visible over a substantial distance by virtue of the elevated position along the ridge, and also because of their size, standing at 115m to tip height. The turbines will be almost twice the height of the anemometer mast currently on Weddicar. (This mast is the approximate location of one of the proposed turbines.)

If this scheme were to go ahead it could open up the whole ridge to further development, not just here - but all the way around the National Park.  Banks are suggesting a ‘community benefit’ of up to 24k per year may soften the blow, but shared out among all the affected communities this is a very small amount. The developer has said they expect the fund would be used for all communities visually impacted. That’s a lot of people.

You can see the plans at the exhibition at Moresby Parks RUFC on weds 27th July 2011, 3pm-7pm
or at
The Adam’s Memorial Hall, Arlecdon on Thurs 28th July 2011, 3pm - 7pm.

There will also be a static display in Whitehaven Library on 25th and 26th July if you can’t get to the exhibitions.

The Planning Application for this scheme is expected to be submitted in August. Some details of the scheme are also available via Banks Renewables Website.
